Last October, I made a playlist on Spotify called " brood, think about boys. I named the playlist "brood, think about boys" because that's what I was doing a lot of at the time, on my walks around my neighborhood in my light jackets. You can brood in any weather, but light-jacket weather is especially conducive for walking around, listening to a curated list of nostalgic bangers, and luxuriating in your feelings. I went through a breakup at the end of last summer that left me truly single for the first time in my adult life. In high school and college, it was easy to quickly jump into a new relationship to cushion the blow of each breakup. But last summer's breakup was the first one I had in a new city where I hardly knew any boys at all, much less any I could start dating to soothe the sting of the loneliness. Days before things ended, when it was still hot and sweaty outside, I sat in a cool, air-conditioned subway car with a friend and confided that I was terrified to leave the relationship I knew was already over. That it felt like I was about to jump into the deep end of a dark swimming pool being fully single as an adult in New York and it's not that I was unsure of my swimming abilities, it was more that I wasn't even sure what the water would feel like. We broke up, I jumped into the swimming pool, and immediately got on all the apps. Tinder, OkCupid, and Bumble were like my sad little flotation devices.
